The food scene in Puerto Escondido has grown a lot in recent years: traditional Oaxacan cooking, fresh seafood, Peruvian fusion, bakeries, specialty coffee and vegan options. This guide helps you decide by area and by time of day.
Breakfast
The cafés in La Punta serve high-altitude Oaxacan coffee, sourdough bread, fruit bowls and eggs with local salsas. It's the best hour of the day: cool, quiet, with the street still half asleep.
Lunch by the sea
At Playa Principal, Manzanillo and Zicatela you'll find seafood palapas: ceviche, aguachile, pescado a la talla and garlic shrimp. Order the catch of the day and ask what came in that morning.
Oaxacan cooking
Tlayudas, mole, memelas and quesillo. The Benito Juárez market, downtown, is the most honest place to try it and also to buy chocolate, coffee and mezcal.
Dinner and chef's kitchens
La Punta concentrates fusion places, wood-fired pizza, Peruvian-Oaxacan cooking and vegetarian menus, almost all within a ten-minute walk.
Tips
Many places take cash only, close one day a week and don't take bookings: arrive early. Drink bottled water and take the mezcal slowly.
Where to stay
Almost all of these are walkable from La Punta Zicatela, where Raíz Hotel Boutique is, so you can go out to dinner without thinking about a taxi back. Write to us on WhatsApp at +52 954 124 0793 and we'll share our current recommendations based on what you like to eat.
At Raíz we serve a homemade breakfast every morning and we're surrounded by the most sought-after restaurants in La Punta.
