A week lets you get to know Puerto Escondido at your own pace and add trips along the Oaxaca coast. This is a plan balanced between beach, nature and rest.
Days 1 and 2 — Puerto Escondido
Settle into La Punta Zicatela: surf, cafés and sunsets. Devote one morning to Carrizalillo and another to a dolphin and turtle tour at dawn.
Day 3 — Manialtepec and bioluminescence
Kayaking and birdwatching on the lagoon in the afternoon; if the moon allows, a swim in the bioluminescence at night.
Day 4 — Chacahua
A full-day trip to the mangroves and the almost untouched beaches of the Lagunas de Chacahua National Park.
Day 5 — Mazunte and Zipolite
An hour away: sea pools, the Mexican Turtle Centre, Punta Cometa at sunset and the relaxed beaches of Zipolite.
Day 6 — Rest and food
A day with no plan: pool, massage, high-altitude coffee, the market and a long seafood lunch.
Day 7 — Last morning
Surf or beach early on, some Oaxacan crafts shopping and departure.
Tips
Distances are short but the roads are winding; hire transport with local drivers. Book accommodation in advance during high season.
Where to stay
A week-long route works best with a fixed base: Raíz Hotel Boutique, in La Punta Zicatela, serves as your camp for trips to Mazunte, Chacahua or Manialtepec and a return to a room you already know. Message us on WhatsApp at +52 954 124 0793 and we'll work out with you which days are best for trips and which to leave free.
Using La Punta as a base lets you do all the trips in a day and come back to somewhere quiet each night.
