Three days are enough to see the essentials of Puerto Escondido without rushing. This itinerary is built from La Punta Zicatela, the most walkable area.
Day 1 — Arrival and La Punta
Arrive, drop your bags and have breakfast at one of the neighbourhood cafés. In the morning, a surf lesson on the gentle waves of La Punta. Eat seafood near the beach, rest in the afternoon and finish watching the sunset from the rocky point. Dinner on the main street.
Day 2 — Sea and bays
Head out early by boat to see dolphins and turtles (and whales if you're travelling between December and March). On the way back, spend the morning at Playa Carrizalillo or Puerto Angelito to swim and snorkel. In the afternoon, walk along Zicatela and watch the expert surfers. At night, if there's a new moon, go to the bioluminescence at Manialtepec.
Day 3 — Nature or rest
Choose between a trip to the Chacahua mangroves or a quiet morning of pool, coffee and local market. Before you leave, take part in a turtle release at Bacocho if you're there in season.
Tips
Book tours the day before, carry cash and biodegradable sunscreen. Taxis between areas are cheap and take 10–20 minutes.
