As a nomad always in search of the best experiences around the world, I've been lucky enough to stay in boutique hotels in Europe, Asia and many other destinations.
Friends had recommended Puerto Escondido to me, and of course it was on my bucket list. I finally decided to make this paradise my next destination, and Raíz was my choice.
Arrival: warmth and hospitality.
From the moment I arrived at the hotel, the welcome was warm and genuine. The team made me feel at home, something you rarely experience from the first hello. They greeted me with a Donají, their welcome cocktail, a house classic with a delicious tropical flavour. The architecture and design of the hotel blend perfectly with the local setting, which gives it a unique, inviting feel.
An experience for the senses.
The first thing I'd highlight is the quality of the food and drink at Hotel Raíz. Every dish is a fusion of Oaxacan flavours, plated in a way that could belong in an art gallery.
Breakfast was simply irresistible, generous and varied, with delicious coffee. And of all the dishes, the one I'd choose is the coloradito mole enchiladas, which are without doubt the signature of the house.
The cocktails were an experience in themselves. Luis, the master bartender, explained with passion and detail the story behind each one, and how every blend of flavours was meant to carry you to the roots of Oaxaca.
One of the most memorable moments was the mezcal tasting organised at the hotel. It was a one-of-a-kind experience that showed me the richness and diversity of this Oaxacan spirit. Trying it with fruit and salts was a real explosion of flavour.
Moments of disconnection.
Hotel Raíz is a true oasis of calm. Although it is a small place, it is very welcoming and full of corners where you can switch off.
From the pool beside the bar, ideal for enjoying their drinks, to the palapa on the upper level, which I almost always found empty and could enjoy as a magical spot all to myself. But my favourite moments were without doubt the yoga classes I enjoyed every morning, included in the booking.
The rooms have a distinctive decor that keeps the spirit of the old Puerto Escondido alive. Every detail is designed to offer comfort and authenticity. The cleanliness and care were impeccable, which made my stay even more pleasant.
Exploring Puerto Escondido.
The hotel's location couldn't be better. Just steps from Zicatela beach and minutes from shops and restaurants, being at Raíz means being at the heart of the action without giving up the calm. It was wonderful to be able to walk to the beach and enjoy the vibrant local life.
The team that makes the difference.
What made my stay unforgettable was, without question, the hotel team. Every member of staff was incredibly kind and helpful. I felt as if I were spending time with friends rather than with hotel employees.
My time at Raíz came to an end, but I leave certain that I'll be back. This place didn't only give me a relaxing, comfortable stay, it also made me feel part of its community. The memories I take from Puerto Escondido and from this beautiful hotel will stay with me forever.
