Puerto Escondido is warm all year round, but each season feels different. Knowing the weather month by month helps you pick dates for what you're after: big waves, calm sea, low prices or sunny days without rain.
Dry season: November to April
These are the most settled months. Sunny days, temperatures between 26 and 32 °C, low humidity and almost no rain. December, January and February are the busiest: more atmosphere, more events, and accommodation fills up fast, especially at Christmas, New Year and Easter week. If you're travelling on those dates, book months ahead.
March and April are still excellent: warm sea, good surf and fewer people than the Christmas peak.
Rainy season: May to October
The rain tends to fall in the afternoon or at night and doesn't last long; mornings stay sunny. The landscape turns green, there are fewer people and prices drop. September is the wettest month and also the quietest of the year.
It's the best season if you're after calm, nature and a cheaper getaway.
Surf season
The biggest swell arrives between May and September, when Zicatela picks up South Pacific swells. For advanced surfers, that's the moment. For those learning, La Punta offers friendlier waves almost all year, and from November to March the sea is usually more manageable.
Whale and turtle watching
Humpback whales pass along the coast between December and March. Turtle releases and nesting happen mainly from July to November. Dolphins are seen on open-sea tours practically all year.
So when is the best time?
For perfect weather and atmosphere: November to April.
For big surf: May to September.
For low prices and quiet: June, September and October.
For whales: December to March.
