How to get to Puerto Escondido
Travelling to Puerto Escondido is easier than it seems, with several transport options depending on your preferences and where you're coming from.
- By plane: the quickest and most convenient way is to fly straight into Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM). There are direct flights from Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Once at the airport, you can take a taxi or book a private transfer to your accommodation. The centre of Puerto Escondido is only a 15-minute drive from the airport, which makes it easy to start your adventure as soon as you land.
You can also fly into Bahías de Huatulco International Airport (HUX), a 2-hour drive from Puerto Escondido, which has more domestic and international flights.
Or, if you want to add a tour of Oaxaca, fly into Oaxaca International Airport (OAX) and continue by road.
- By road: if you'd prefer a more scenic experience, you can reach Puerto Escondido by road. The new Oaxaca–Puerto Escondido highway cuts the journey from Oaxaca to 2.5 hours, and from Mexico City from 12 to 8 hours. Several bus companies offer direct routes taking around 15 hours, depending on the route and the stops. From Oaxaca there are also buses and vans running regular services: buses usually take the longer, more comfortable route (via Pochutla), while the faster vans take the direct route through the mountains and take 6 to 7 hours.
The best times to visit Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is a wonderful destination all year round. Choosing the best time to travel depends on what you're looking for.
Winter (December to February): in winter, Puerto Escondido welcomes you with perfect weather: dry and fresh. It's the ideal time to enjoy the beaches without the intense heat and to watch whales and dolphins — a natural spectacle you shouldn't miss.
Spring (March to May): spring brings sunny days and quieter beaches. With fewer tourists, you can explore the coast at your own pace. The temperature starts to climb, but the sea breezes keep everything very pleasant.
Summer (June to August): summer in Puerto Escondido is vibrant and green. There is some rain, but the sunny days are perfect for surfing and the bioluminescence in the sea is an impressive night-time show.
Autumn (September to November): autumn offers warm, comfortable weather as the rainy season draws to a close. It's the ideal time to see turtle releases and enjoy the waterfalls at full flow. A perfect moment to be in touch with nature.

- Health and safety: keep your vaccinations up to date and protect your skin with sunscreen and repellent. Travel insurance can give you the peace of mind you need.
- Language: learning a few phrases in Spanish will help you connect with locals and immerse yourself in the culture.
- Currency: the official currency is the Mexican peso, so make sure to carry cash, as some smaller businesses don't take credit cards.
- Power: Mexico uses type A and B plugs, at 127 V. If you're coming from Europe or Asia, you'll need an adapter.
