Getting to Puerto Escondido is easier than it looks. There are three main ways: plane, bus and road. Here are the times, the routes and what suits which kind of trip.
By plane
Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) is about 10 minutes from the centre and 15–20 minutes from La Punta Zicatela.
From Mexico City: direct flights of roughly 1 hour 20 minutes.
From Oaxaca City: short flights of 35–45 minutes on regional aircraft.
From other cities: usually with a connection in Mexico City.
It is the most comfortable option if you are coming for a few days. On landing you can take a taxi, a shared colectivo or book a private transfer.
By bus
From Oaxaca City, buses take 7 to 8 hours on the new road. There are several departures a day and it is the cheapest option.
From Mexico City the journey is 12 to 14 hours, usually overnight.
Buses arrive at the terminals in central Puerto Escondido; from there, La Punta is 10 minutes by taxi.
By road
The Barranca Larga–Ventanilla motorway cut the Oaxaca–coast drive to about three and a half hours. It is a winding mountain route: drive in daylight, with a full tank and breaks.
From Huatulco it is about two and a half hours; from Mazunte and Zipolite, around an hour.
Getting around once you're there
Inside Puerto Escondido, taxis are cheap and plentiful. La Punta is entirely walkable: cafés, restaurants and beach are minutes apart. Many travellers rent a scooter or a bike to move between areas.
