Puerto Escondido is famous for the giant waves of Zicatela, but it's also a great place to learn to surf, as long as you pick the right beach.
Where to learn
La Punta Zicatela: long left-handers that break gently over sand. The best option for beginners and intermediates.
Playa Carrizalillo: a sheltered cove with small waves, ideal for first lessons and for children.
Zicatela: for expert surfers only. The currents are strong and the break is heavy.
What lessons are like
A typical lesson lasts 1.5 to 2 hours and includes board, rash guard and one instructor per one or two students. It starts on the sand with the pop-up technique and continues in the water on whitewater. Most students stand up on the first day.
When to go
From November to April the sea is usually more manageable. From May to September the waves grow: learning at La Punta is still possible, but go early, when the wind is calm.
Safety tips
Never go in alone if you don't know the currents, respect priority on the wave, and use biodegradable sunscreen and a rash guard to avoid burns.
